If you have diabetes, sertraline can make it more difficult to keep your blood sugar stable. Monitor your blood sugar more often for the first few weeks of treatment with sertraline and adjust your diabetes treatment if necessary. Once you're feeling better it's likely that you will continue to take sertraline for several more months. Most doctors recommend that you take antidepressants for 6 months to a year after you no longer feel depressed. Stopping before that time can make depression come back. There don't seem to be any lasting harmful effects from taking it for many months and years. However, taking sertraline for more than a year has been linked to a small increased risk of getting diabetes. Sertraline isn't any better or worse than other antidepressants. Sometimes people respond better to one antidepressant than another. I'm not really asking for advice as this is all medical stuff and the only person who will really know what to do will be my GP, but I do want to hear what Sertraline was like for anyone else who has used it because I'm on week 9 of 50mg and I've had the most horrendous time of my life. A brief history; I have struggled with mental illness all my life, specifically depression and anxiety, OCD, and emotional outbursts. Prior to this I had been on Citalopram for five years, mainly 20mg then 40mg in the last year but it ceased to be effective so I wanted to try something else. I thought weaning myself off Citalopram for six weeks was the hardest thing I've ever done but even that was nothing compared to what being on 50mg of Sertraline for the last 9 weeks has put me through. Firstly, the physical side effects of this particular SSRI are absolutely HORRENDOUS. If I had any idea what I was in for I would have asked my GP for something else. I had the worst insomnia of my life three weeks in for about three weeks, I feel sick all the time, I get a lot of heaadaches/migraines - especially when waking up - I have emotional outbursts, I get worse anxiety than I've had in five years especially when I go out, and overall the effect this drug has had on both my mental and phsycial health has been not remotely worth it. Thanks for your replies - I took a 50mg tablet a couple of days ago and two hours later I was vomiting with a bad stomach ache, shaking, and seeing these green flashes. I seem to be having some of the worse side effects, unfortunately. Do you think there's any correlation with the severity of someone's side effects and the time they take to wear off (if they do at all)?
