    Prednisone therapy

Prednisone is similar to cortisol, a hormone naturally made by your adrenal glands. If you take prednisone for more than a few weeks, your adrenal glands decrease cortisol production. A gradual reduction in prednisone dosage gives your adrenal glands time to resume their normal function. The amount of time it takes to taper off prednisone depends on the disease being treated, the dose and duration of use, and other medical considerations. A full recovery can take anywhere from a week to several months. Contact your doctor if you experience prednisone withdrawal symptoms as you are tapering off the drug. I have tried prednisone alone, then cyclosporine (while on prednisone), then prograf (while on prednisone) and lastly cytoxan (while on prednisone) and the closest to success I got was with cytoxan - I got a 3 month drug free remission with that one. The others didn't fully work, I just continued to relapse each time I got low on prednisone. I respond very quickly to prednisone but again relapse around 2.5 - 5 mg's daily. So, my doctor has suggested long term, low dose prednisone therapy. She's thinking 12 mg's daily for a year and then trying to taper down as low as possible - she's mentioned 10 mg's every other day is probably what I'd stay at. I had a relapse prior to that, and began again with 40mg of pred. I'd just like to hear from anyone who's on long term, low dose prednisone therapy to find out how well you tolerate it. I tapered slowly over 6 months until I reached 5mg. I did fairly well on prednisone, with few really bad effects.
